2 PhD positions in Quaternary Palaeoecology / chironomid-based climate reconstruction100% / Possible date of entry: July 2026The Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel invites applications for two PhD positions in the research group Geoecology. Where have warm-adapted ecosystems and organisms survived unfavorable conditions in the past? What were the environments that characterized such refugial areas during the Quaternary Ice Ages? How and with which dynamics did warm-adapted organisms expand from these areas under warming climate after the ice ages? These are central questions for both Biogeography and Quaternary Palaeoecology, and the answers provide the basis for predictions of ecosystem and species response to future climatic change. We are looking for PhD candidates that will work towards resolving these research questions in the interdisciplinary SNF research project ECO-ICE. The project will collect, analyse and interpret new lake sediment records from key refugial localities covering the Last Glacial Maximum. This will allow a revised assessment of the survival of temperate tree populations in Europe and their response to major climatic variations during and after the last ice age. The successful candidates will develop high-resolution palaeoecological records of aquatic invertebrate assemblage change, particularly focusing on the remains of chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae. Based on these sensitive temperature indicators, they will develop quantitative reconstructions of glacial temperatures using multivariate statistical methods, results that will be compared with other, independent temperature reconstructions, high-resolution palaeobotanical records, and vegetation modelling scenarios developed by project partners. This research will be essential for developing new palaeoclimate scenarios for ice age Europe, for understanding ice age ecosystems, and for reassessing the ice age refugia and postglacial expansion of temperate trees in Europe.Your positionThe two PhD students will work in close collaboration with six other PhD candidates at the Universities of Basel and Bern and contribute to fieldwork in Western, Central and Southern Europe, sedimentological analyses and dating of ice age lake sediment records. They will produce records of fossil chironomid assemblage change, identifying chironomid and other aquatic invertebrate remains under the microscope, and develop ecological and numerical interpretations of the results. They will take the main responsibility for developing palaeoecological temperature records at key project sites and, together with other PhD students and project partners, contribute to the overall interpretation of the project results. The positions are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) for four years and salaries will follow SNF guidelines (www.snf.ch).Your profileApplicants should hold an MSc in Earth or Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, Ecology, Quaternary Science, Paleoecology, or a related field. Experience in paleolimnology, palaeoecology, limnology, microfossil analysis and/or sediment work would be an advantage. Candidates should be motivated to conduct fieldwork abroad and have good English language skills. Good communication and organizational skills, willingness to take on responsibility for individual subprojects and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team environment are essential. We offer youUniversity of Basel is an equal opportunity employer. Salaries are according to the staff-regulations and depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

PhD position in Experimental MicrobiologySingle-cell analysis of antibiotic tolerance in mycobacteriaThe Department of Biomedicine is a joint initiative of the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop therapies for areas of unmet medical need. With over 70 research groups and 800 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University, located across six sites in the city centre.Your positionWe are offering a PhD position in experimental microbiology to study antibiotic tolerance in Mycobacterium abscessus, one of the most challenging to treat bacterial pathogens. The position is part of a newly funded international consortium that brings together experts in mycobacterial genetics, high-throughput phenotyping, structural biology, and clinical research across Switzerland, Israel, Australia and the USA.The projectAntibiotic treatments for M. abscessus fail in more than half of patients despite in vitro drug activity. A key reason is drug tolerance, the ability of bacteria to survive antibiotic exposure without classical resistance. Our lab (boecklab.com) has developed a large-scale live-cell imaging platform that tracks hundreds of millions of bacteria during antibiotic exposure, enabling systematic analysis of killing dynamics. Using this approach, we have shown that bacterial survival is strongly shaped by the bacterial genetic background and predicts treatment outcomes (Nature Microbiology, 2026). In this project, you will use this platform to quantify bacterial survival at the single-cell level across strains, drugs, and environmental conditions to identify the molecular mechanisms that shape drug tolerance during human infection.Your roleYou will perform and analyse high-content live-cell imaging experiments to quantify bacterial viability under antibiotic exposure across diverse conditions and clinical isolates. In close collaboration with postdoctoral researchers, you will integrate these data with results from CRISPRi and transposon mutagenesis screens to identify molecular mechanisms and M. abscessus genotypes that underlie tolerance phenotypes. Your work will involve systematic experimental design, generation of large-scale datasets, and quantitative analysis of single-cell time-kill dynamics. You will contribute to linking genetic variation to bacterial survival strategies and help build a comprehensive understanding of drug tolerance in clinically relevant settings.Your profileMSc in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related disciplineExperience in microbiology or molecular biologyInterest in combining computational and experimental approachesStrong motivation, scientific curiosity, and driveAbility to work independently and as part of a teamGood communication skills in EnglishWe offer youA fully funded PhD position within a highly collaborative international consortiumTraining in cutting-edge technologies, including high-content imaging and automation workflowsA project positioned to reshape how antibiotic efficacy is understood and measuredA dynamic, international research environment in BaselCompetitive salary and excellent quality of life in Switzerland

PhD Position in Physiological Tree Ecology100 % / starting July 2026 or laterThe Physiological Plant Ecology group at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland invites applications for a four-year PhD position in physiological tree ecology within a project fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNFS). The project will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). All tree species reach upper elevational and latitudinal distribution limits that are primarily caused by species-specific low temperature thresholds beyond which a given species cannot persist and reproduce sustainedly. A profound knowledge of these low temperature limits and their underlying biological mechanisms is necessary to establish mechanistic models for tree distribution and growth that will improve our predictions of tree species' range-shifts as well as productivity changes within their current ranges with future climate warming. The cold limitation of tree growth may be driven by tree hydraulic constraints induced by restricted root water uptake at low soil temperatures. However, our current knowledge about the significance of soil temperatures for productivity and distribution of temperate trees is very limited, and cold soil effects are still not well represented in current tree hydraulic models. In this project, we will apply an innovative combination of experimental studies with tree seedlings and observational field records on mature trees to assess the physiological impact and ecological significance of low root temperatures for the hydraulic relations and growth of common European temperate tree species.Your positionThe PhD candidate will be responsible for planning and executing experiments with seedlings of different European tree species to identify physiological mechanisms and biological consequences of the cold-temperature restriction of root water uptake. These experiments will specifically investigate the significance of aquaporin facilitated root water transport as a cause for the different cold sensitivities among species using stable isotope labelling and determine species-specific low temperature thresholds of root water uptake using continuous sap flow measurements. In addition, the PhD candidate will conduct in situ measurements of soil and air temperatures in forests across elevational transects in the Swiss Alps to functionally relate the experimentally identified hydraulic cold thresholds to the thermal conditions at the natural upper elevational limit of the investigated tree species. In the second half of the project, the team will be extended by a postdoc position, who will focus on assessing the effects of cold soils on the hydraulic relations and growth of mature trees. The PhD candidate is supposed to jointly contribute to the respective field measurements at the long-term alpine treeline research site Stillberg in Davos, Switzerland. Finally, the PhD candidate will also contribute to teaching within the Physiological Plant Ecology group.Your profileWe are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a self-organized and solution-oriented work attitude, strong communication and organizational skills, the ability to work in a team and the commitment to an inclusive workplace are essential. Very good written and spoken English is mandatory. Applicants should hold a MSc degree in botany, ecology, forest science, environmental science or related fields, and have a basic knowledge of plant physiology. Experience with plant ecophysiological methods and a basic understanding of electrical engineering are an asset. Candidates should be able to prepare and conduct greenhouse experiments with tree seedlings and independently conduct statistical analyses with R. Candidates should be also willing to conduct field work in subalpine terrain over a longer period. We offer youA fully-funded PhD position for four years in a dynamic research group with an excellent research infrastructure in the international and interdisciplinary Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland. You will join a supportive, collaborative and cooperative working environment and will have the opportunity to be integrated in established international research net-works. Internationally competitive salaries and social benefits are provided according to the rules of the University of Basel. The University of Basel (http://www.unibas.ch) is the oldest university in Switzerland and is located at the border between Switzerland, France and Germany. PhD position, SNSF project Modern Painting and the Lesbian GazeThe SNSF project Modern Painting and the Lesbian Gaze: Queer Women Artists in Europe, 1900–1950, hosted at the University of Basel's Institute of Art History (Departement of Arts, Media, Philosophy) and led by Prof. Dr. Charlotte Matter, offers a full-time doctoral position for the duration of 3.5 years. In analyses of artworks from the first half of the twentieth century, feminist art history has largely overlooked non-heterosexual sexuality and desire, while queer art history has primarily focused on the works of gay men. Against this background, the project proposes the notion of the 'lesbian gaze' as a methodological provocation to decentre the male and heterosexual gaze as dominant frameworks for interpreting modern painting. The project brings together feminist and queer approaches to reposition the practices of women painters within queer art history. It adopts an intersectional framework that foregrounds the significance of class for queer lives, as well as for conditions of artistic production, thematic concerns and the circulation of artworks. Grounded in rigorous art-historical analysis, the project focuses on painting – a medium with a long tradition of gendered hierarchies that has therefore been critically reassessed by feminist scholars – to demonstrate how queer women artists negotiated, subverted or reappropriated its conventions. The project employs the term 'women' not as a fixed, biologically determined category, but in a way that is mindful of a spectrum of gender experiences, some of which may not have been publicly articulated in the first half of the twentieth century. The umbrella term 'queer women' refers to people who transgressed dominant heteronormative frameworks and lived – or contemplated – non-normative sexualities and gender identities at that time.Case studies, conducted by the project leader and two doctoral researchers, will be accompanied by a range of scholarly activities designed to reflect on questions of terminology and to advance methodological approaches. These include an ongoing reading group, two international workshops, and an open-access co-edited volume. The project leader focuses on Irène Zurkinden and Leonor Fini, while one doctoral researcher (already appointed) examines the work of Émilie Charmy. We invite applications for a second doctoral position to investigate one or several further queer women painters working in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Possible case studies for this dissertation project include, but are not limited to: Jeanne Mammen, Gertrude Sandmann, Lotte Laserstein, Anita Clara Rée, Gluck, Gwen John, Patricia Preece and Dorothy Hepworth, Tove Jansson and Tuulikki Pietilä, Gerda Wegener and Lili Elbe, and Jeanna Bauck and Bertha Wegmann. Postdoctoral Position in Environmental / Landscape Archaeology (Sabina Tiberina, Central Italy)70% (1 year with possibility of extension)The Department of Ancient Civilizations at the University of Basel invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Environmental / Landscape Archaeology, tenable from September 2026 (negotiable), within the SNSF-funded project ?The Roman Villa as Ecosystem: Climate, Production, and Society in the Sabina Tiberina" (PI: Prof. Dr. Sabine Huebner). The position is specifically directed at candidates with expertise in the environmental archaeology of central Italy, and ideally with prior field or research experience in the Sabina Tiberina or adjacent regions. The projectThe project situates Roman villa sites within their broader environmental and landscape context between ca. 300 BCE and 600 CE. It investigates how changing land-use regimes, subsistence strategies, and rural production systems responded to climatic variability and long-term environmental change. The successful candidate will play a central role in linking site-based evidence from villa contexts to regional patterns of land use, vegetation, and settlement.Your positionThe core responsibilities center on the development and application of a landscape-archaeological framework that situates the project's villa sites within regional settlement and land-use dynamics in the Sabina Tiberina (300 BCE–600 CE). This includes close engagement with legacy survey datasets, such as the Tiber Valley Project and comparable regional studies, and the integration of archaeological evidence with published environmental and palaeoclimate data. Particular emphasis lies on the diachronic reconstruction of land use, vegetation, and subsistence regimes (e.g. mixed farming, olive cultivation, viticulture), as well as on assessing the impact of climatic variability on agricultural production and rural settlement stability. The postholder will be expected to contribute actively to the project's publication strategy, including the preparation of articles in international peer-reviewed journals, and in summer schools and outreach activities. Participation in field campaigns is required, and, depending on experience, the candidate may take on a coordinating role in their archaeological implementation.Your profileApplicants should hold a PhD in Environmental Archaeology, Landscape Archaeology, Geography, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience in Mediterranean landscape archaeology is expected, and familiarity with central Italian survey traditions is highly desirable. Candidates should be able to operate confidently across scales, from micro-contextual environmental data to regional landscape reconstruction, and to integrate environmental proxies into historical interpretation.A strong research interest in ancient rural economies, subsistence agriculture, and human–environment interactions is essential. Excellent command of English is required. We offer youA stimulating research environment at the Department of Ancient Civilizations, housing one of the world's leading research libraries in Classical Studies and many international collaborations. The Institute of Ancient History hosts the 'Basel Climate Science & Ancient History Lab' (https://ancientclimate.philhist.unibas.ch/en/lab/) directed by Prof. Dr. Sabine R. Huebner and accommodates multiple ongoing large-scale research projects. The position offers integration into a highly collaborative research environment and provides the opportunity to develop an independent research profile at the intersection of environmental archaeology and ancient history, with a clear focus on land-use dynamics and climate–society interactions in central Italy. Employment conditions follow the regulations of the University of Basel.

Postdoctoral position in Molecular MicrobiologyGenetic determinants of antibiotic tolerance in mycobacteriaThe Department of Biomedicine is a joint initiative of the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop therapies for areas of unmet medical need. With over 70 research groups and 800 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University, located across six sites in the city centre. The positionWe are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in molecular microbiology to investigate the genetic basis of drug tolerance in Mycobacterium abscessus, one of the most challenging to treat bacterial pathogens. Our lab (boecklab.com) has developed a large-scale live-cell imaging platform that tracks hundreds of millions of bacteria during antibiotic exposure, enabling systematic analysis of killing dynamics across strains and drugs. Using this approach, we have shown that bacterial survival is strongly shaped by the bacterial genetic background and predicts treatment outcomes (Nature Microbiology, 2026). In this project, we now aim to identify the genetic determinants of bacterial survival and death and to build a species-wide tolerance atlas linking genotype to phenotype and clinical outcome. The work will provide fundamental insights into bacterial biology and identify targets for improved therapies.Your positionYou will generate and screen pooled CRISPRi libraries across multiple M. abscessus genetic backgrounds and infection-relevant conditions, using viability-based selection strategies to quantify bacterial killing at scale. You will integrate these results with genomic data from over 1,000 clinical isolates to build predictive models linking genotypes to tolerance phenotypes and clinical outcomes. You will lead the project and co-supervise a PhD student.Your profileWe are looking for candidates with a strong track record in molecular microbiology. PhD in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related disciplineExpertise in molecular bacteriology (e.g. CRISPRi, genetic manipulation)Basic programming skills (Python or R) for data analysisAbility to design and execute experiments independentlyStrong motivation, scientific curiosity, and driveAbility to work collaboratively and mentor junior researchersAdvantageous: experience with mycobacteria, high-content imaging, and screening approachesWe offer youA fully funded 4-year postdoctoral position within an international consortiumAccess to cutting-edge technologies (automation, sequencing, high-content imaging, etc.)A project positioned to reshape how antibiotic efficacy is understood and measuredClose integration with drug development and clinical researchSupport for independent funding and career developmentCompetitive salary and excellent quality of life in Switzerland
