      In this internship in the Switching team at ABB Corporate Research in Baden-Dättwil, Aargau, Switzerland, you will first perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of existing low-voltage switchgears. This task includes the set-up of the simulation geometries, the analysis of the results as well as a comparison between experimental and simulated results. Second, you will develop models that describe the interaction of electric arcs with solids. This internship is the chance of acquiring hands-on experience in fluid dynamics, electromagnetism and plasma physics within an international team of researchers in an industrial environment.

      Your responsibilities

      • Carry out CFD simulations of low voltage switchgears
      • Compare the simulation results with that obtained experimentally
      • Propose new ideas for models, implement them in our simulation tool and validate optimize them by parametric studies as well as comparison to experiments

      Your background

      • Officially enrolled Master student in physics, mechanical or electrical engineering (M.Sc.)
      • Proficiency with CFD or FEM simulations, fluid dynamics and/or electromagnetism
      • Proficiency in programming (C/C++ and or Python)
      • Fluency in written and spoken English
      • Non-EU/EFTA citizens, please note that a certificate from your university, showing that an internship is a mandatory part of your studies, is required for the visa application.
